Therapy with me moves at the pace it needs to, not the pace you might expect. We will build a relationship before we touch anything difficult, because trauma work simply doesn't happen safely without one

Getting Started

Before we book anything in, we'll usually have a brief conversation — by phone, video call, or email, whatever suits you. I'll ask what's brought you to therapy, what you're hoping will be different, and whether you've tried therapy before. It's a chance for both of us to work out if I'm the right fit — for you, and for what you need. If it feels right, I'll send over some forms to get you set up properly, along with terms and conditions.

Getting to know you

The first few sessions are about understanding your story — not rushing to fix anything, but taking the time to properly understand what's happened and how it's shaped you. Together, we start making sense of your difficulties, and from that, we build a treatment plan.

Sometimes it's clear early on that EMDR alone is the right fit — particularly when your difficulties link back to one event, or a small number of specific memories. For others, especially where there's a longer or more complex history, an integrative approach works better — combining EMDR with schema-informed work. Schema Therapy offers a framework that helps people understand themselves in a way that genuinely resonates, often for the first time. If it's useful, we can also use questionnaires to get a clearer picture of your symptoms — some people find this helpful, others prefer not to, and that's entirely your choice.

Research backs this up: one study comparing EMDR and imagery-based schema work, in adults with childhood trauma, found both approaches led to similarly large, lasting improvements — not just in trauma symptoms, but in the deeper personality-level patterns underneath them (Daniëls et al., 2025). It's part of why I don't default to one approach for everyone — both are genuinely effective, and the right starting point depends on you.

What Therapy Looks Like

If EMDR is the main approach

If we’re working more integratively

I help you understand your difficulties through the lens of Schema Therapy — making sense of where certain patterns, emotional states, and reactions come from, and the vulnerability sitting underneath them. We use this understanding to trace present difficulties back to where they began, and from there, move into either imagery-based work (helping meet needs that went unmet at the time) or EMDR processing, depending on what's needed. I also weave Schema Therapy techniques into EMDR itself, to support processing and work through anything that gets in the way. The two approaches work well together, each strengthening the other.
